OM Meditation: The Primordial Sound Resonance

Harness the power of the sacred syllable AUM to create deep mental silence, clear energy blocks, and sync brainwaves.

The Power of AUM

OM (written phonetically as AUM) is described in the Upanishads as the primordial, cosmic sound from which the universe manifests. From a modern scientific perspective, chanting OM creates a physical resonance frequency that stimulates the vagus nerve and aligns brain waves into alpha states, inducing physiological calm.

The Three Sounds of AUM

The syllable is composed of three phonemes representing different states of consciousness:

  1. "A" (Ah): Initiates from the throat and resonates in the lower abdomen. It represents the waking state (Jagrat), creation, and the physical body.
  2. "U" (Oo): Rolls forward across the tongue and resonates in the chest. It represents the dream state (Swapna), maintenance, and the mental/emotional body.
  3. "M" (Mm): Produced by closing the lips and resonates in the nasal passages and brain. It represents deep sleep (Sushupti), dissolution, and the causal body.
  4. The Silence (Turiya): The resonance that follows the chant represents absolute consciousness beyond the three states.

How to Practice OM Chanting

  • Setup: Sit in a comfortable meditative posture (Sukhasana or Padmasana) with the spine straight and shoulders relaxed.
  • Breath: Take a deep abdominal breath.
  • Chant: On exhalation, produce the sound A-U-M. Allocate roughly 30% of the breath to "A", 30% to "U", and 40% to "M".
  • Silence: Let the sound fade naturally. Remain completely still, focusing on the vibration at the crown of your head and the surrounding silence.
  • Rounds: Start with 11 or 21 rounds daily.
