Ritucharya: Adapting to Seasonal Rhythms
Discover Ritucharya—the Ayurvedic science of seasonal changes in diet and lifestyle to maintain year-round health.
What is Ritucharya?
Ritucharya (Ritu = season, Charya = regimen) is the Ayurvedic practice of modifying our diet, clothing, activity levels, and yogic practices as the seasons change. The doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) fluctuate in our body based on external climate shifts, and Ritucharya helps maintain equilibrium.
Guidelines for the Core Seasons
1. Grishma Ritu (Summer)
- Climate: Hot, dry, and depleting. Pitta dosha rises.
- Aahar (Diet): Focus on cooling, hydrating foods. Sweet fruits, coconut water, cucumber, mint, and buttermilk. Avoid spicy, pungent, and salty foods.
- Vihar (Lifestyle): Practice gentle yoga. Emphasize cooling pranayamas like Sheetali and Sheetkari. Avoid over-exercising under the sun.
2. Varsha Ritu (Monsoon)
- Climate: Damp, humid, and muddy. Vata dosha accumulates, and digestion slows down.
- Aahar (Diet): Eat light, warm, freshly cooked foods. Incorporate warming spices like ginger, black pepper, and hing. Avoid raw salads and cold drinks.
- Vihar (Lifestyle): Focus on warming, joint-freeing movements (Pawanmuktasana series). Keep your feet warm and dry.
3. Hemanta / Shishira Ritu (Winter)
- Climate: Cold, windy, and dry. Digestive fire (Agni) is strongest.
- Aahar (Diet): Rich, nourishing, warm foods. Nuts, sesame seeds, ghee, root vegetables, and hot soups.
- Vihar (Lifestyle): Practice dynamic yoga (dynamic Surya Namaskars, backbends) to build heat. Daily self-massage with warm sesame oil is highly recommended.
